I converted to islam back in 2004 and I was one of a few players to openly express my faith as a muslim in the premiership, I faced some adversity and it played a part in my career direction afterwards.
At a time when Islam was getting a lot of negative media coverage, I felt that there needed to be more awareness about muslims so it could break down the misconceptions and barriers.
I came across many young players who were scared to practice their faith because they felt that they would be discriminated against, I felt so sorry for them.
I wanted to provide a platform where we could highlight the many examples of practicing muslim players at the very top of their profession. This could give the youth positive role models to look up to.
The main goal is to make it easier for them (youth) so that they can aspire to become football players and know that they do not need to compromise their faith to get there!.
